What is Your Path? Kitchen / Hedge Witch
About Me I'm a mom to four, gramma to five. I knew I was pagan as young as five or six, but just had no name to call it - got kicked out of the Lutheran church my family went to when I was fourteen for asking inappropriate questions like "Why isn't God female?" I'm a proud Pagan, out to nearly everyone except my very religious family. Interestingly enough, my maternal grandmother (staunch Southern Baptist) knew my choice of religion and gave me her blessing on my choice before she died. She was quite the wise woman with many home remedies and herbal cures. I'm a writer, an artist (portraits), have been a single mom for the past eight years to my now seventeen year old homeschooled son. I'm going back to school to become a doula and perhaps eventually a midwife (a dream of mine since childhood). I love nature, long walks, thunderstorms (natch), my family, my friends, my fur children (3 cats - Isis, Bastet and Asherah), and my faith. With me, what you see is what you get. No masks, no acts, no games. Just me.
    Music

I like most anything, except I'm getting a little tired of angsty teenage stuff. My collection includes Clannad, Enya, Stevie Nicks, Sarah McLachlan, Kate Bush, Tori Amos, Loreena McKennitt, Evanescence, Lady Isadora, Gypsy, Nickelback, Creed, Pink Floyd, Styx, Kansas, also a lot of Native American music like R. Carlos Nakai, Celtic music of all kinds.
Movies a little of everything. My favorite movie of all time, though, is "Somewhere in Time" (what can I say - I'm a romantic at heart)
TV Anything that makes me think - CSI (all), Bones, Criminal Minds, Numb3rs, Heroes, Ghost Whisperer, Medium, Supernatural, Charmed, and most anything on HGTV. We also watch a lot of the Discovery and History channels.
Books Anything by Mercedes Lackey, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Rosemary Edghill, Nora Roberts, as well as many more - too many to list. Love to read when I can get time enough to sit down.
Likes honesty (above all), camping, candles, sun-moon-stars in all their guises, cobalt blue glass, gardening, and too much more to list.
Dislikes liars, people who go out of their way to be nasty and mean, closed minds.
Hobbies writing (urban fantasy - love it when real world meets fantasy world), drawing portraits, making jewelry, sewing, camping with our pagan tribe.
Vices way too blunt most of the time (Sagittarius), hate to exercise (thanks to back injury)
    Virtues honest, reliable, steadfast friend.
Heroes the women in my family, my dad and grandfather, my kids

    Happy Solstice!

    Thursday, June 19, 2008, 11:47 PM [General]

Just wanted to wish everyone a very Happy Solstice tomorrow.

I'm off to go for our annual Solstice camping trip.  My son and I will head out early tomorrow and be back Sunday.  We're meeting the rest of our pagan tribe there so we are anticipating that there will be about twenty or twenty five of us camping together.

My daughter is going to come up and stay at the house while we're gone.  It will give her some much needed alone time.  She'll feed the cats and veg ... something she desperately needs.

Hopefully when I get back I'll have some wonderful photos to post.

    May your Solstice be spectacular!

    Happy Father's Day

    Sunday, June 15, 2008, 04:47 PM [General]

Happy Fathers Day to all the dads out there. May your day be filled with love, family gatherings, fun and gratefulness for all you do for your family!

Today is always kind of bittersweet for my family. My dad died in 1973 when he was only 43 years old. He never lived to see 4 of his 5 daughters grow up and see their accomplishments, he never saw his grandchildren born. I miss the quiet hours we spent when I was a teen, playing chess on the back patio, taking long twilight walks listening to the birds and pondering life's questions. Those are the memories of him that I cherish.

My mom remarried over ten years after he died. My step-dad is the greatest, he's the best stepdad ever ... and not to take away from his gift to us .. but there are times I just miss my own dad... the man I look like (sometimes scarily so), the man from which my love of journalism springs. My mom and stepdad just embarked on a cruise ... a gift from my stepdad's sister to her brother for Father's Day. The four of them (mom, stepdad, his sister and her husband) are currently cruising the eastern Caribbean.

My oldest daughter's father died when she was three, my two middle daughters' father opted out of their lives when they were toddlers. Only Justin sees his father with any regularity. He will be leaving shortly to spend a couple of hours with his dad (amount of time dad's choice).

As a quick aside, I got (to me) the ultimate complement this morning. A friend called to wish me a Happy Fathers Day (as she said ... because I am a single mom and therefore have to fill both roles on a regular basis.)

So ... Happy Fathers Day to all who fit the role ... to my friends, my family (father, grandfathers, forefathers) ... may the day shine for you!
